Patsy McHugh thought he had caught a nice 14lb salmon when he felt the fish fight in the water. It was only when he reeled it in that he realised the shear size of the fish. Officially weighing in on certified scales at 33.5lb and 42.5 inches long, it is the biggest recorded salmon caught by rod and line in the Foyle.

Patsy wasn't shy about how and where he caught it. He used a green highlander fly just above Lifford Bridge yesterday evening. Patsy said 'I'm looking forward to going back and catching his mate'!
The Loughs Agency will be getting moulds made of the fish so that a model of it can be seen at the Riverwatch Aquarium and Visitor Centre in Prehen. The Agency is also carrying out some scientific research to find out a little more about the life history of this particular fish - using scale samples to determine how long it spent at sea and DNA to discover which river it was heading for.
No doubt Patsy and his family will be enjoying the taste of fresh wild salmon over the next few days!
